It Happened to Me: I was a witness

Posted on April 23, 2008. Filed under: Random, current events, insight, memories, writing | Tags: , , , , , |

There used to be a column in Jane magazine called “It Happened to Me.”  In it, a Jane “reader” would write an article about something that happened to them: cancer survivors, cult members, rape victims, etc.  I always really liked that column because it seemed like *everyone* had a more exciting story to tell than [...]

April is National Poetry Month–and I don’t care!!

Posted on April 23, 2008. Filed under: Random, current events, insight, writing | Tags: , , , |

Here’s the thing… I don’t like poetry. I know I’m “supposed” to.  But I don’t.  I try to think of myself as a writer (although what that means is beyond me).  I work for an educational association devoted to literacy. People at work are ga-ga over poetry, literature, etc.  My dad’s girlfriend is even a [...]

Enough already! Media attention and the Warren Jeffs case

Posted on April 18, 2008. Filed under: Random, books, current events, movies, politics | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I’ll admit it… I’m fascinated by Mormons. No, strike that: I’m fascinated by Mormon Fundamentalists. No, to be fair, I’m fascinated by *any* kind of religious fundamentalism. And I find polygamy interesting.
But all this coverage of the Warren Jeffs scandal is becoming a little much.
I first read about Jeffs [...]

I felt the Earth move

Posted on April 18, 2008. Filed under: Random, current events | Tags: |

There was an earthquake here today.  Well, not exactly here, but a few hours south of here.  It woke me up last night and I felt the after shock again this morning.
The first one was strange. I was sleeping on the couch.  The dog started barking.  I thought it was the wind.  Then the house [...]

“Going Green” makes me want to puke!

I am soooooooo sick of the “Going Green” fad right now.   Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the principle behind it.  I just don’t like the trendiness of it.
I’m not exactly a tree-hugger, but I recycle.  I have florescent light bulbs in my house, even though they make me look like a ghost.  I [...]

Politics and Baseball

Posted on April 15, 2008. Filed under: Random, current events, insight, politics, pop culture | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Politics is not baseball.
This is why discussing politics with friends/family/coworkers really annoys me.
Not because I am ill-informed or don’t like to hear viewpoints other than my own. No, my real beef with discussing politics is the either/or, us/them mentality people on BOTH sides of the fence have towards politics.
People basically choose their parties like they [...]

Stuck in the airport

So, I’m stuck in the airport and you’re stuck reading this free-form blog post…. (okay, you’re not STUCK reading it, but I’ll feel better if you do!)
Long story short:  Plane didn’t leave on time. Then we sat on the runway for 45 mins.  Missed my connecting flight.  Got an 8:10 p.m. flight… which has now [...]

When the Levees Broke

Posted on March 27, 2008. Filed under: current events, movies | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

On to my day.  Not a great diet day.  Too many carbs.  Boredom is the enemy of dieting. I’m eating entirely too much food and not exercising enough (or in the case of this week… not at all)
I *finally* got around to watching Disc 1 of the Spike Lee documentary on Hurricane Katrina When the [...]
